Unusual Noises

Banging, rattling, or grinding sounds may indicate motor, fan, or internal component issues.

Weak Heating or Cooling

Blowing warm air in cooling mode or cool air in heating mode could signal refrigerant problems, compressor failure, or airflow restrictions.

Short Cycling

Frequent on-and-off cycling without completing a full heating or cooling cycle may be caused by thermostat issues, refrigerant leaks, or a failing compressor.

Higher Energy Bills

A sudden spike in energy costs can mean your heat pump is working harder due to dirty filters, refrigerant leaks, or a malfunctioning compressor.

Ice Buildup on Coils

Ice forming on the outdoor unit or evaporator coils may point to low refrigerant levels or restricted airflow.

Unresponsive Thermostat

If your heat pump won’t turn on or doesn’t respond to temperature adjustments, the issue could be with the thermostat, wiring, or control board.

What Should You Do Before Calling Us To Repair Your Heat Pump?

At Hardin Bros HVAC, we understand that some heat pump issues can be resolved with simple troubleshooting steps. Before scheduling a repair, try these quick checks to see if you can restore your system’s performance.

Check the Thermostat

  • Ensure the thermostat is set to the correct heating or cooling mode and that the temperature setting is accurate.
  • Replace the batteries if needed and check for any incorrect programming.

Inspect the Power Supply

  • Check the circuit breaker or fuse box for any tripped breakers and reset if necessary.
  • Verify that the heat pump’s power switch is on.

Change or Clean Air Filters

  • Dirty or clogged filters restrict airflow and reduce efficiency.
  • Clean or replace filters regularly to prevent overheating, poor performance, and higher energy costs.

Clear Debris Around the Outdoor Unit

  • Remove leaves, branches, and dirt from around the outdoor unit to allow proper airflow.
  • Keep at least two feet of clearance around the unit to prevent blockages.

Check for Ice Buildup

  • If you see ice on the outdoor unit, switch the system to fan mode to help defrost it.
  • Persistent ice may indicate airflow restrictions or refrigerant issues, requiring professional service.

Listen for Unusual Noises

  • Rattling, grinding, or squeaking could signal a mechanical issue, loose parts, or worn-out components.
  • If noises persist, a professional inspection is recommended.

If these steps don’t resolve the issue, or if you’re unsure about anything, Hardin Bros HVAC is ready to help.

What Are The Most Common Heat Pump Problems We Repair?

At Hardin Bros HVAC, we specialize in professional heat pump repair services throughout Cleveland, Rocky River, Fairview Park, surrounding areas. Our skilled technicians diagnose and fix all major heat pump issues, ensuring your system runs efficiently year-round.

Blower Motor Repair or Replacement

The blower motor circulates air throughout your home. If it malfunctions, your heat pump may struggle to distribute warm or cool air evenly.

Capacitor Replacement

Capacitors provide the necessary energy to start and run the motor. A failed capacitor can prevent your heat pump from turning on.

Compressor Repair or Replacement

The compressor pressurizes refrigerant to regulate temperature. If it fails, the heat pump won’t heat or cool effectively.

Condenser Coil Cleaning or Replacement

A dirty or damaged condenser coil reduces system efficiency, causing higher energy consumption and poor performance.

Fan Motor Repair or Replacement

The fan motor regulates heat transfer during both heating and cooling. If it malfunctions, your system won’t function properly.

Refrigerant Leak Repair

Leaking refrigerant reduces your heat pump’s efficiency and output, forcing the system to work harder. We repair leaks and refill refrigerant to the correct levels.

Reversing Valve Repair or Replacement

The reversing valve switches between heating and cooling modes. If it fails, your heat pump may be stuck in one mode.

Thermostat Repair or Replacement

A faulty thermostat can cause inconsistent temperatures, continuous running, or failure to turn on.

Defrost Control Repair or Replacement

The defrost control prevents coil freezing in winter. If it malfunctions, your heat pump may ice over and stop working efficiently.

We repair all makes and models, including Trane, Carrier, Lennox, Rheem, Mitsubishi, Daikin, York, Goodman, American Standard, Bryant, and Ruud.

If you'd like to schedule an estimate for your heat pump repair please give us a call (216) 855-4511 or fill out our online estimate request form and we'll get right back to you.

Should You Replace Or Repair Your Heat Pump If It's Failing?

At Hardin Bros HVAC, we know that deciding between repairing or replacing your heat pump can be a difficult choice. If your system is struggling, the following factors can help guide your decision.

Age of the Heat Pump

Most heat pumps last 10 to 15 years. If your unit is nearing the end of its lifespan, upgrading to a newer, more efficient model may be more cost-effective than continued repairs.

Frequency and Cost of Repairs

If your heat pump requires frequent repairs, or if a single repair costs more than 50% of a new system, replacement may be the better long-term investment.

Energy Efficiency

Older heat pumps are often less efficient, leading to higher energy bills. If you’ve noticed increased heating and cooling costs, an upgrade to a modern, high-efficiency unit can reduce energy consumption.

Inconsistent Temperatures

A failing heat pump may struggle to maintain consistent indoor temperatures. If repairs aren’t solving the problem, a new system may provide better comfort and performance.

Excessive Noise or Strange Sounds

Heat pumps should run quietly. If your system is making grinding, rattling, or buzzing noises, even after repairs, it could indicate serious internal issues that warrant a replacement.

Frequent Cycling

If your heat pump turns on and off constantly, it may be undersized for your home or struggling to maintain the desired temperature. If this issue persists despite maintenance and minor repairs, a replacement might be necessary.

Not sure whether to repair or replace your heat pump? Our experts can assess your system and recommend the best solution for your home.

Do You Have Questions About Heat Pump Repairs?

Common heat pump issues include refrigerant leaks, frozen coils, malfunctioning thermostats, and electrical problems. Additionally, clogged filters and blocked airflow can lead to underperformance or even system shutdowns. Our experienced technicians are skilled at diagnosing and repairing all of these problems quickly and efficiently.

Signs that your heat pump may need repairs include unusual noises (like banging or grinding), inefficient heating or cooling, short cycling (frequent on-and-off cycles), ice buildup on the outdoor unit, and unexpectedly high energy bills. If you notice any of these issues, it’s best to schedule a professional inspection.

Most heat pump repairs can be completed within a few hours. However, the time required depends on the nature of the problem. Simple issues like filter changes or thermostat adjustments can be resolved quickly, while more complex repairs, such as replacing major components, may take longer.

In many cases, repairing your heat pump is a cost-effective option, especially if it’s relatively new and the issue is minor. However, if your system is more than 10-15 years old or if the cost of repairs is close to the cost of a new unit, replacement may be more economical. We’ll provide you with a thorough assessment and help you decide on the best course of action.

The cost of heat pump repair varies depending on the extent of the problem and the parts required. Minor repairs, such as thermostat adjustments or replacing a capacitor, tend to be more affordable, while major component replacements like a compressor or motor can be more expensive. We offer competitive pricing and transparent estimates, so you’ll know exactly what to expect.

It’s recommended to have your heat pump serviced annually to ensure optimal performance and prevent costly repairs. Regular maintenance includes checking refrigerant levels, cleaning coils, inspecting electrical connections, and replacing filters. Preventative care helps extend the life of your heat pump and keeps it running efficiently.

Yes, we can repair all makes and models of heat pumps, including popular brands like Trane, Carrier, Lennox, Rheem, Mitsubishi, Daikin, Goodman, York, and more. Our technicians are trained and experienced with a wide range of heat pump systems, ensuring expert repairs no matter the brand.

Absolutely. If your heat pump is not functioning efficiently, it can result in higher energy consumption. By repairing issues such as refrigerant leaks, dirty filters, or thermostat problems, your system will work more efficiently, lowering your energy usage and reducing your utility bills.

The best way to prevent future heat pump problems is to schedule regular maintenance and be proactive about small repairs. Ensure filters are replaced regularly, clear debris around your outdoor unit, and address any unusual noises or performance issues as soon as they arise. Regular maintenance can catch minor issues before they turn into costly repairs.

Jacob and his team are absolutely phenomenal; I won't have anyone else touch our HVAC now. They've helped us with our hot water heater, they've installed brand new AC unit and furnace and helped with duct work. Jacob is honest but very kind, knowledgeable and down to earth- you know youre talking to a real person who cares about his customers and his work- not just another salesman looking to make money. He's willing to work with people around their budget and to fit all of their needs which was a huge plus for us, considering we were quoted $18k-$30k from other big name companies. With Hardin Bros we got better service, better care and spent well under half of what it would've cost us anywhere else. He's the absolute best, we won't go to anyone else from now on. 10/10 recommend! Hardin Bros have customers for life with us!
