Why Should You Install A Heat Pump?

At Hardin Bros HVAC, we specialize in high-efficiency heat pump installations throughout Cleveland, Rocky River, Fairview Park, Lakewood, and surrounding areas. Heat pumps are one of the most energy-efficient heating and cooling solutions, making them an excellent alternative to traditional gas or electric furnaces.

Heat Transfer vs. Heat Generation

Unlike furnaces that burn fuel or use electricity to create heat, heat pumps work by transferring heat from the outdoor air into your home.

Even in cold weather, there is still heat in the air that a heat pump can capture and transfer inside, making it far more efficient than traditional heating methods.

Versatile, Two-in-One System

A heat pump provides both heating and cooling, eliminating the need for separate HVAC systems.

This reduces installation costs and minimizes maintenance compared to managing a furnace and an air conditioner separately.

High SEER and HSPF Ratings

Heat pumps have high SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) and HSPF (Heating Seasonal Performance Factor) ratings, which indicate superior energy efficiency compared to standard furnaces.

Ideal for Ohio’s Climate

Heat pumps operate most efficiently in mild to moderate winter temperatures, making them an excellent choice for Ohio’s cold winters and hot summers.

When temperatures stay in the mid-30s or higher, heat pumps maintain optimal efficiency, significantly reducing heating costs.

Potential Energy Savings

Depending on your previous heating system and the efficiency of your new heat pump, switching to a heat pump could reduce heating costs by up to 50%.

With rising energy prices, this can result in substantial long-term savings.

Regular Maintenance Ensures Maximum Efficiency

To keep your heat pump running at peak efficiency, routine maintenance is essential, including:

    • Cleaning or replacing filters
    • Keeping the outdoor unit clear of debris
    • Scheduling regular professional check-ups

If you're considering switching to a heat pump, Hardin Bros HVAC can help you find the most efficient, cost-effective solution for your home.

Understanding Heat Pump Efficiency Ratings

Choosing the right heat pump can be confusing with so many different ratings to consider like SEER or HSPF and many home and business owners don't know what they mean.  Here are explanations of these ratings and how they apply to choosing the right heat pump for your needs.

SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio)

SEER is a measurement used to gauge the energy efficiency of a heat pump or air conditioning unit during its cooling operation. It's calculated by dividing the cooling output over a typical cooling season by the total electrical energy input during the same period. The higher the SEER rating, the more energy-efficient the system is.

For instance, a heat pump with a SEER rating of 18 is more energy-efficient than a unit with a SEER rating of 14. Heat pumps available in the US market have SEER ratings that range widely, with some of the most energy-efficient models reaching into the high 20s or even low 30s.

HSPF (Heating Seasonal Performance Factor)

While SEER rates cooling efficiency, HSPF is used to measure the energy efficiency of a heat pump during its heating operation. It's calculated by dividing the total heating output over a typical heating season by the total electric energy input during the same timeframe. As with SEER, a higher HSPF rating indicates a more energy-efficient system.

In Ohio, a Heat Seasonal Performance Factor (HSPF) of at least 8.2 is recommended for heat pumps to meet energy efficiency standards. However, for greater energy savings and to qualify for certain federal or state rebate programs, it is advisable to choose a heat pump with an HSPF rating of 9.0 or higher.

When choosing a heat pump, considering both SEER and HSPF ratings can give you a comprehensive understanding of the unit's overall energy efficiency. Units that are more efficient may cost more upfront but can offer significant energy cost savings over time.

Your specific climate and heating and cooling needs should also be taken into account. In Ohio where winters can be fairly cold and summers very warm and humid, both a high SEER and HSPF rating can be beneficial for year-round comfort and efficiency.

What Makes Your Home Or Building A Great Candidate For A Heat Pump?

If you're considering a heat pump for your Ohio home or building, several factors can determine if it’s the right fit for your property:

Year-Round Temperature Needs: Ohio’s climate, with cold winters and warm summers, makes heat pumps an efficient solution for maintaining comfortable temperatures throughout the year.

Well-Insulated Homes: Homes with high-quality insulation, energy-efficient windows, and doors are excellent candidates as they can optimize heat pump performance by minimizing energy loss.

Outdated Heating Systems: If you currently rely on older systems like electric baseboard heaters or aging furnaces, a heat pump can offer better efficiency and cost savings.

Ductwork Compatibility: Homes with existing ductwork, or those suitable for ductless mini-split systems, are ideal for heat pump installations.

Space for Outdoor Unit: Adequate space for the outdoor component of the heat pump is necessary for optimal operation.

If your home or building meets these conditions, a heat pump could be an energy-efficient and environmentally friendly solution for both heating and cooling your space.

Do You Have Questions About Heat Pump Installation?

The duration of heat pump installation can vary based on different factors, such as the type of heat pump being installed and the complexity of your home's layout or existing HVAC systems. Typically, we can install a heat pump in one to three days.

Your heat pump will require a sturdy and level base for proper operation. At Hardin Bros HVAC, we offer two options: gravel or concrete. Gravel bases are a cost-effective solution that provides good drainage, while concrete bases offer a more durable and stable platform for the unit.

Heat pumps can be installed in most homes, but the ideal type of heat pump can depend on the home's existing heating/cooling system, the local climate, and the home's insulation. A professional HVAC assessment can help determine the best heat pump system for your needs.

Depending on the installation type, we may need to make small cuts to your home. For ductless mini-split systems, a small hole (typically around 3 inches) is required to connect the outdoor and indoor units. We ensure that any modifications are minimal and sealed properly to prevent air leaks or damage to your home.

If your current electrical system cannot support the power demands of a new heat pump, you may need to upgrade your wiring. This depends on the system’s size and efficiency. During our initial inspection, we assess your home’s electrical setup to determine if upgrades are necessary and discuss the best course of action with you.

The cost of heat pump installation in Ohio can vary based on the type of heat pump, the complexity of the installation, and labor costs. On average, the cost can range from a $6000 to $12,000+. It's best to contact us so we can provide you with a detailed and accurate quote.

With regular maintenance, a heat pump can last between 10 to 15 years, on average. Some high-quality models may even last up to 20 years.

Regular maintenance for a heat pump includes cleaning or replacing filters, cleaning the outdoor unit, and having it inspected annually by a professional HVAC technician to ensure it's operating at peak efficiency.

Heat pumps are most efficient in moderate climates, but advancements in technology have made certain types of heat pumps, such as cold climate heat pumps, effective even in colder temperatures. Ohio offers a temperate climate which is ideal for heat pump efficiency.

Most heat pumps come with a warranty that covers defects in manufacturing and craftsmanship. The length of the warranty can vary, but typically ranges from 5 to 10 years. It's important to fully understand the terms of your heat pump warranty, including what actions could potentially void it.  We can discuss these with you during an estimate.

While all heat pumps make some noise, the amount of noise can vary depending on the make and model. Many modern heat pumps are designed to operate quietly and may be quieter than your existing heating or cooling system.

If you choose a ducted heat pump system and you already have ductwork in your home, we will need to assess your existing ductwork's suitability. If your ductwork is in good condition, it may be possible to use it with your new heat pump.

Jacob and his team are absolutely phenomenal; I won't have anyone else touch our HVAC now. They've helped us with our hot water heater, they've installed brand new AC unit and furnace and helped with duct work. Jacob is honest but very kind, knowledgeable and down to earth- you know youre talking to a real person who cares about his customers and his work- not just another salesman looking to make money. He's willing to work with people around their budget and to fit all of their needs which was a huge plus for us, considering we were quoted $18k-$30k from other big name companies. With Hardin Bros we got better service, better care and spent well under half of what it would've cost us anywhere else. He's the absolute best, we won't go to anyone else from now on. 10/10 recommend! Hardin Bros have customers for life with us!
