How Does A Boiler Heating System Work?

A boiler heating system works by using either gas, oil, or electricity to heat water and distribute warmth throughout your home. Unlike a furnace that heats air, a boiler system heats water, which is then used to generate radiant heat through baseboard radiators, radiators, or underfloor heating. Here's how the process works:

Heating the Water: The boiler heats water in its tank using a burner powered by gas, oil, or electricity. The water is then either converted into hot water or steam, depending on the type of system.

Circulating the Heat: If it’s a hot water boiler, the heated water is circulated through a network of pipes to radiators or baseboards installed in various rooms. These radiators then emit heat to warm the space. In the case of steam boilers, the water is heated to the point of producing steam, which rises through the pipes and is released through radiators, warming the room.

Temperature Control: Once the water or steam has delivered its heat, it cools down and is returned to the boiler to be reheated, completing the cycle. The temperature is typically controlled by a thermostat, which signals the boiler when to turn on and off, maintaining a consistent, comfortable indoor temperature.

Efficiency: Modern boilers are designed to be highly efficient, with features like condensing technology that recycles heat from exhaust gases. This efficiency not only helps in heating your home evenly but also reduces energy consumption.

Boilers are known for delivering consistent and comfortable heat, making them an excellent choice for homes, especially in cold climates. With proper maintenance, a boiler system can last for many years, providing reliable and energy-efficient heating.

What Are The Most Common Boiler Problems We Can Repair?

Boiler heating systems are known for their durability and efficiency, but like any heating system, they can experience problems over time. Understanding the most common issues can help you recognize when it's time to call a professional for repairs. Here are some of the most frequent problems homeowners encounter with boiler systems:

1. Low or No Heat

One of the most common issues with boilers is a lack of heat or insufficient heating. This can be caused by a variety of factors, including a malfunctioning thermostat, low water levels, or a faulty circulator pump. If the boiler isn’t producing enough heat or is cycling on and off frequently, it’s likely a sign of an internal problem that needs attention.

2. Water Leaks

Leaks are a major concern for boilers, as they can lead to water damage and a drop in system pressure. Common causes of leaks include corrosion in the pipes or boiler tank, loose connections, or cracks in the heat exchanger. It's important to address leaks promptly to avoid further damage to the system.

3. Kettling

Kettling occurs when minerals from hard water build up inside the heat exchanger. This causes the water to overheat and create a loud banging or rumbling noise, much like a kettle boiling. Not only does kettling reduce the efficiency of your boiler, but it can also shorten the system’s lifespan by causing overheating and damage to the heat exchanger.

4. Pilot Light or Ignition Issues

In gas boilers, the pilot light or electronic ignition system is responsible for starting the burner. If the pilot light keeps going out or the ignition system fails, the boiler won’t be able to heat the water. This can be caused by a thermocouple malfunction, faulty gas supply, or issues with the electrical components.

5. Low Boiler Pressure

Low pressure in a boiler system can cause it to stop working properly. Common causes of low pressure include water leaks, problems with the pressure relief valve, or a malfunctioning expansion tank. If your boiler pressure drops too low, it will struggle to heat your home efficiently.

6. Thermostat Problems

If the thermostat isn’t functioning correctly, your boiler may not be receiving the right signals to heat your home effectively. Thermostat problems can lead to temperature inconsistencies, with some rooms feeling too hot while others remain cold.

7. Radiator Issues

In some cases, your boiler may be working properly, but the heat isn’t being distributed evenly through the radiators. This can happen due to air pockets trapped in the system, causing some radiators to be colder than others. Bleeding the radiators is a common solution to this problem, but persistent issues may indicate a more serious circulation problem.

8. Strange Noises

Boilers are typically quiet when they’re running efficiently, so any unusual noises, such as banging, whistling, or gurgling, can indicate an issue. These noises can be caused by air in the system, sediment buildup, or pump failure, all of which require professional attention to prevent further damage.

9. Frozen Condensate Pipe

Condensing boilers have a condensate pipe that removes acidic waste water. In cold weather, this pipe can freeze, leading to blockages and causing the boiler to shut down as a safety precaution. Thawing the pipe and insulating it can help prevent this issue from recurring.

10. Circulator Pump Failure

The circulator pump is responsible for moving hot water through the system and into your radiators or baseboards. If the pump fails, your boiler may produce heat, but it won’t be distributed throughout your home. This can be caused by wear and tear or electrical issues within the pump.

What Can You Do To Fix Your Boiler Before Calling Us?

Before calling in a professional for boiler repair, there are a few basic troubleshooting steps you can take to potentially fix the problem yourself. These simple checks may save you from an unnecessary service call and help get your heating system back up and running. Here are some things to try:

Check the Thermostat

Ensure that your thermostat is set to the correct temperature and on the right setting (heat mode). Sometimes, the thermostat may have been accidentally set too low, or it might be in cooling mode. Try raising the temperature a few degrees to see if the boiler kicks on. If you’re using a programmable or smart thermostat, make sure the schedule is set correctly and the batteries are functioning properly.

Reset the Boiler

Most modern boilers have a reset button. If your boiler has stopped working, simply pressing the reset button might resolve the issue. However, avoid hitting the reset button multiple times—this could make the problem worse or signal a deeper issue that needs professional attention.

Check the Boiler Pressure

Boilers rely on a certain pressure level to operate efficiently. Check the boiler’s pressure gauge—it should read between 1 and 2 bar. If the pressure is too low, you may need to repressurize the system by opening the filling loop valve until the gauge returns to the proper level. Be sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions, and only attempt this if you are comfortable doing so.

Bleed the Radiators

If your radiators are warm at the bottom but cold at the top, air may be trapped inside the system. Bleeding your radiators can help release this trapped air and restore efficient heat distribution. Use a radiator key to open the valve at the top of each radiator until water starts to come out. This is a simple fix that can often resolve uneven heating issues.

Check for Power and Gas Supply

Ensure that your boiler has power and gas. Check that the circuit breaker hasn’t tripped, and if you have a gas boiler, make sure the gas supply is turned on. If you’ve recently had a power outage, your boiler may need to be reset. If the gas supply has been disrupted or there’s no power, restoring either may bring your boiler back online.

Inspect the Pilot Light (For Older Gas Boilers)

If you have an older gas boiler with a pilot light, make sure it’s lit. If the pilot light has gone out, you can attempt to relight it by following the manufacturer’s instructions. If the pilot light continues to go out, this could be a sign of a faulty thermocouple or other internal issues, which will require professional repair.

Check for Frozen Condensate Pipe

In colder climates, the condensate pipe in condensing boilers can freeze, blocking the system and causing it to shut down. If you suspect this is the issue, you can thaw the pipe by applying warm water (not boiling) or using a heat pack. Once the pipe is thawed, reset the boiler and see if it resumes normal operation.

Inspect for Water Leaks

Look around your boiler and heating system for signs of water leaks. A small leak can reduce boiler pressure and stop it from functioning properly. If you find a leak, it's best to turn off the system and call a professional, but knowing the location of the leak can help expedite repairs.

By trying these simple troubleshooting steps, you may be able to fix minor issues with your boiler and avoid the need for a professional service call. However, if the problem persists or you’re unsure of how to proceed, it’s always best to contact Hardin Bros. HVAC for expert assistance.

Do You Have Questions About Boiler Repairs?

Common signs that your boiler may need repairs include no heat or hot water, strange banging or rumbling noises (also known as kettling), leaking or pooling water around the unit, low boiler pressure, and radiators that are not heating evenly. If your boiler is struggling to maintain consistent temperatures, it’s time to call for a professional inspection.

The time required for a boiler repair depends on the complexity of the issue. Minor problems like a malfunctioning thermostat or low pressure can often be resolved in an hour or two. More serious issues, such as replacing a circulator pump or fixing leaks in the heat exchanger, may take several hours. Our technicians will provide an estimate based on the specific repair needed.

The cost of boiler repairs varies depending on the issue and the parts needed. Simple repairs, such as fixing a thermostat or bleeding the radiators, can cost as little as $100 to $300. However, more complex repairs like replacing the heat exchanger or circulator pump can cost between $500 to $1,500. We always provide an upfront estimate before starting any repair work.

Low boiler pressure is often caused by a water leak in the system or a faulty pressure relief valve. Air trapped in the radiators or pipes can also lead to pressure loss. If your boiler pressure gauge consistently reads below 1 bar, it's a sign that something is wrong, and the system may need repressurizing or professional attention to find the underlying cause.

Boilers should be serviced once a year to ensure they are working efficiently and to catch any potential issues before they turn into expensive repairs. Regular maintenance includes cleaning the system, checking for leaks, testing components like the thermostat and pressure valve, and ensuring the system is operating safely.

Strange noises like banging, whistling, or gurgling are often caused by kettling—a buildup of limescale or sludge inside the heat exchanger. This can cause water to overheat and boil, creating loud noises. Other causes could be air trapped in the system or issues with the circulator pump. These noises are a sign that your boiler needs attention before further damage occurs.

While you can perform some basic maintenance, such as bleeding the radiators or checking the pressure, most boiler repairs should be left to professionals. Boilers involve complex systems and potential safety risks, such as gas leaks and carbon monoxide exposure. It's best to have a trained technician handle any repair work to ensure your system is safe and functioning properly.

With proper maintenance, a well-built boiler can last between 10 to 15 years. However, if your boiler is frequently breaking down or no longer heating efficiently, it may be more cost-effective to replace it rather than continue with repairs. Our team can assess whether your system is still worth repairing or if a replacement is the best option.

At Hardin Bros. HVAC, we repair all makes and models of boilers, including popular brands such as Weil-McLain, Burnham, Navien, Bosch, Peerless, Slant/Fin, Rinnai, and Buderus. Our technicians are trained to diagnose and fix issues with a wide range of systems.

Jacob and his team are absolutely phenomenal; I won't have anyone else touch our HVAC now. They've helped us with our hot water heater, they've installed brand new AC unit and furnace and helped with duct work. Jacob is honest but very kind, knowledgeable and down to earth- you know youre talking to a real person who cares about his customers and his work- not just another salesman looking to make money. He's willing to work with people around their budget and to fit all of their needs which was a huge plus for us, considering we were quoted $18k-$30k from other big name companies. With Hardin Bros we got better service, better care and spent well under half of what it would've cost us anywhere else. He's the absolute best, we won't go to anyone else from now on. 10/10 recommend! Hardin Bros have customers for life with us!
